Target setter

News of new diversity targets in BBC Radio and Music. The current BBC-wide target is to reach 15% BAME staff by 2021. James Purnell wants individual Radio & Music departments all to reach that figure by 2023 - no more relying on Radio 1Xtra and The Asian Network to supply numbers in bulk.

In the last figures, Radio & Education, Mr Purnell's wider group, reported 11.3% BAME staff in March 2019. We're not likely to get this year's figures until September. Combined with a 12.6% figures for disabled staff, Radio & Education exceeds the 20% target that Radio & Music is setting for diverse staff in independent production companies.

  • At leadership level, James might want to look at the management team of the newly-formed BBC Audio group. Some way off a 15% target....
