Mark Thompson, who will be 63 at the end of this month, has revealed he told his bosses he would be leaving the New York Times back in early 2019. The formal hunt for a successor took a year, and the former BBC DG will be gone in September.
From 2017 to 2019, Mr Thompson earned $17.4m in salary, stock awards and bonuses. In February this year, he sold 90,000 shares in the company, for $3.4m. He still holds more than 400,000 shares - more than the company chairman. In 2013, a year after joining the Times, he purchased a four-bed, three-bathroom apartment on the ninth floor of The Cornwall Building, at West 90th St and Broadway, for $3.4m.
He's told reporters he's likely to stay in the United States; his three adult children have started careers there and his wife, Jane Blumberg is American, though she's still the patron of an arts charity in Oxford. It's possible the couple still have property in Jericho.
