The Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge, has penned a thumbsucker for the Royal Television Society, urging the incoming DG Tim Davie, a Selwyn alumnus, to seize the opportunity for change at the BBC.
Former BBC Editorial Director Roger Mosey's article is light on practical suggestions, despite quotes from a "current executive", "one of Hall's colleagues", "a seasoned observer", a "figure with experience of running BBC budgets" and a "former senior television executive".
Here's one from me. Do a deal to take the full year hit on over-75 licences, if the Government agrees to take back ownership of the problem as part of its social care review from 2021/22. See it as part of short-term Covid-19 pain sharing, but a long-term principled move to take the BBC out of a bad social policy decision. Buys time for better position in the mid-Charter/licence fee review.
