The Business School at City University in London is dropping "Sir John Cass" from its title. It acquired the style eighteen years ago, after a donation from the Sir John Cass Foundation, but has now decided that its wealth 'was obtained through his links to the slave trade'
It goes deeper: even the Sir John Cass Foundation, formed in 1748, after his death, is dropping the name - and removing a statue from the facade of its offices in Jewry Street. Trustees are consulting on a new name. Sir John Cass’s Foundation and Redcoat secondary in Stepney Way, Stepney Green, is also to remove a statue and bust of Sir John Cass after consulting staff and pupils. It's also looking for a new name. Sir John Cass's Foundation Primary School and the Cass Child & Family Centre, just off Aldgate is doing the same.
