More equal

A short sitrep on the BBC's equal pay issues, courtesy of a Freedom of Information request from Caroline Barlow. Caroline won an out-of-court settlement of some £130k from the BBC, after filing an employment tribunal claiming that 15 men were paid more than her for the same job. She says the battle with the BBC took two years, and cost her £36,000 in legal fees.

The BBC response says that, as of March 2020, there were nine equal pay claims from women against the BBC registered at employment tribunals. There were also seven women seeking to resolve pay claims via ACAS.

"We can confirm that from 19 July 2017 to 08 March 2020  84 female colleagues have received
subsequent pay increases through the formal appeal process. During the same time
period 608 female colleagues received a pay revision or increase through an informal pay
enquiry."
