The BBC has topped the inaudibility of Jamaica Inn. The impenetrable narrative of The Luminaries is match only by long periods in which the director of photography messed up the aperture. It's just dim.
The signs were not good. This mini-series has been six years in gestation, with Eleanor Catton re-writing for the screen back in 2014. The second sentence of the original book, a ' note to reader', gives you an idea of her problem. "We acknowledge the celestial phenomenon known as precession, by which motion vernal equinox, the astrological equivalent of the Greenwich meridian, has come to shift" .
O yes indeed. I won't be time shifting this one.
