It's serious. The everyday story of countryfolk will go unrecorded for three weeks from 3rd May, to be replaced by three weeks of 'themed' repeats. So far, The Archers, the mirror to British rural life for seventy years, has failed to reflect coronavirus. Presumably Editor Jeremy Howe's team of creatives will put the whole of Ambridge on ventilators for the period, and only 50% of the characters will emerge on Monday 25th May.
It's something of a puzzle that the writers haven't yet been able to find a way of bringing lockdown to dramatic life. So many of all our interactions are on Facetime, WhatsApp, Zoom and more. There's really no reason isolated actors can't do that too. Perhaps that's why the news of the three week break was released at midnight on a Friday.
