Wash up

The BBC News Dartboard of Death may look very strategic, especially to those on day release from senior editorial jobs to posh American universities, but it's printed on a transparent shroud over a traditional salami-slicer. More on the Newsgathering nonsense later, but first let's catalogue what we know about the hunks so far carved from the Dried Sausage of News.

World Service: Not clear about the exact number of post being closed as a result of  dropping World Update, but there are also 4 jobs going on World Service news bulletins (none lost on the domestic side) and 2 on the production side of "The Newsroom", a World Service extended news bulletin.

5Live: Morning Reports, the show that launched the network back in 1994, is axed. The 0500 extended bulletin, Monday to Friday, is currently down to 15 minutes, from its original half hour. The airspace will be filled by extending Wake Up To Money. Other changes: the weekend editions of Up All Night will carry podcasts from BBC Sounds (presumably, they'll have to edit them to make them fit the newswheel). In an organisation apparently contemplating more news 'outside London', 5Live News is closing 9 jobs in Salford, and one in London.

(Historical note: When 5Live decided to 'start' the working day at 0500 in 1994, Radio 4 was still getting up at 0600, and Today at 0630. By 2006, Controller of R4 Mark Damazer realised he was missing out on a early morning/long distance commuter audience, brought forward Today to 0600, and started his network at 0520. That's an example of 'super-serving'.)

Newsnight: 12 posts to go. (This, apparently, will cut the programme's 'in-depth' film-making in half and reduce its investigative journalism. If those bits are halved, what on earth is the total team ?  You cut 12 jobs out of most networked news shows, they'd never get on the air...)

Today: Some dedicated reporters on the show think yesterday's announcement mean they're safe. Mmm. Why has Sarah Sands chosen today to announce she's leaving as Editor ?  Have they threatened Puzzle for the Day ?
