The return of Gavin and Stacey was watched by an average audience of 11.48m according to the overnight ratings for Christmas Day. It's believed to be the highest figure for any Christmas Day show since 2008 (Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death BBC1 - 14.3m viewers). G&S's last Xmas special came at Christmas 2009, when they were watched by 9.2m.
The show beat the day's other offerings by a country mile. The Queen's Speech: 7.7m (up from last year's overnight of 6.4m), Strictly Xmas Special: 5.6m, Michael McIntyre's Big Show: 5.2m, Call the Midwife: 5.2m, EastEnders: 5.2m. Coronation Street was ITV's top offering, at 4.5m, with Emmerdale at 4.1m.
The highest all-time Xmas tv audience belongs to a showing of Crocodile Dundee (BBC1, 1989), 21.77m.
