Melanie

The next chief executive of Ofcom looks set to be Melanie Dawes, 53.

She's currently is Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (Starter Homes a speciality), and a Trustee of the Patchwork Foundation, trying to get ethnic minority and disadvantaged communities get more involved in civil society. In April, as Chair of the Civil Service People Board, she was appointed as the overall champion for Diversity & Inclusion in the Civil Service. She was previously Civil Service Gender Champion.

Melanie went to Malvern, then PPE New College, Oxford and MSc economics, Birkbeck. She joined the Civil Service in 1989, starting with two years in the Department of Transport as an economic assistant, then in over 15 years at the Treasury rose from junior economist to Director of Europe.  She worked closely with Sir Jeremy Heywood at the Cabinet Office before the move to MHCLG. She's likely to nearly double her salary in the move to Ofcom.

She's married to former Telegraph hack Benedict Brogan, who fronted for the paper on leaked MPs expenses, and who is now spinning for Lloyds Bank. The couple live on the front line in Kennington. Ms Dawes has expressed some interest in tv .
