It was five years ago that BBC News broadcast its "100% gold-plated scoop" with live coverage of a police raid on Sir Cliff Richard's flat in Sunningdale.
Today's papers are reporting that the BBC has settled claims for legal costs from Sir Cliff at between £2m and £2.25m; during the court proceedings, lawyers for the BBC said Sir Cliff's spending on lawyers was "grossly unreasonable".
A BBC source says the settlement is coming from insurance: “We are pleased Sir Cliff Richard, the BBC and South Yorkshire Police have reached an amicable settlement of Sir Cliff Richard’s legal costs. The BBC’s costs are within the scope of our legal insurance.” The story is not carried on the BBC News website.
