Scare tactics ?

Nobody's quite switched off anything yet, but fans of iPlayer Radio are pretty tense. What might drive them to BBC Sounds, other than a warning of closure, I wonder ?

The Archers

We're aware that the episodes of The Archers broadcast on Tuesday 10 September, Wednesday 11 September and Thursday 12 September are not available to download on the BBC iPlayer Radio app.

We're looking into this and we'll update this page with any further information. In the meantime, these episodes are available to download on the BBC Sounds app and from The Archers programme website.

This sort of thing may already be having an effect. James Purnell wrote on September 4th that Sounds has "nearly 1.9 million weekly signed in users".  In the first release of Lord Hall's as-yet-to-be-delivered Royal Television Society speech on Thursday, the DG was to say BBC Sounds is reaching nearly two million users a week, though it is missing from later versions.

James Purnell argues it's time for "one radio app", and nobody supports old versions. This perhaps is not the whole story, as there's no current plan to drop the international version of the iPlayer Radio app.

0800 Wednesday update: Both apps now seem up to date with The Archers. So now time to update the Sounds FAQ page....
