BBC taste-maker James Purnell, fresh from turning off the BBC Radio iPlayer, has issued instructions. “As a jazz lover myself, I’m very proud of our track record in supporting the jazz scene and we are keen to ensure we are playing our part in its future too through a jazz collection on Sounds and a plethora of new programmes and partnerships."
This includes making "Later..with Jools Holland" feature 'emerging jazz artists'. This mix hasn't been on tv since 1957, when Jack Good's Six Five Special featured the jazz bands of Chris Barber, Humphrey Lyttleton, John Dankworth, Ronnie Scott and Kenny Baker.
And over at Radio 3, Alan Davey, with his personal taste in plangent Canadian and Icelandic folksingers (he's learning all the chords) makes room on Saturday nights, for "Freeness" hosted by vibraphone-improv specialist Corey Mwamba.
