The Mail seems to have secured a factoid from the impending BBC Annual Report 2018/19. It says the line on 'on-air talent' will show a total of £157m, up almost 7% from last year's figure of £147.6m, but still well down on 2016/17's £193.5m.
A BBC spokesman seems to confirm the accuracy of the leak, telling the Mail that ‘while spending on content is up by £239 million, the proportion that goes on talent has actually reduced’. And from that we can deduce that total content spend for 18/19 was £2,862m.
Last year, the BBC forecast that the 2018/19 talent paybill would include 40% women, up from 25%. And that's probably outbalanced the savings on some expensive men leaving during the financial year - Chris Evans, Eddie Mair and Simon Mayo
