At the helm

It's been a busy June so far for the BBC executives who construct official replies to public complaints.

These published replies/apologia are usually only required when complaints rise above 100 - for example, 991 didn't like the Trump blimp in the studio in the Victoria Derbyshire show.

The number of complaints about "Our Next Prime Minister" hasn't yet been revealed. The BBC1 Conservative election show required a public answer about the selection of members of the public who put questions to the candidates. And then, four days later, came a second public response, this time to complaints about the performance of Emily Maitlis.  According to The Sun, the first version included the line "her style may not be to everyone’s taste”; this has now gone - but some faint praise remains: "We highly regard Emily as one of our regular presenters, she is extremely experienced and well versed with dealing with politicians. We consider that she did a good job during this programme."

The programme's hands-on executive producer was combative newsgathering boss, Jonathan Munro.
