All new numbers

BBC Sounds is to have a Controller, says James Purnell.

In an email to staff, the Director of Radio and Education says "We’ve made a great start with more than two million app downloads and brilliant new music mixes and podcasts … In just one year, our monthly downloads have gone up by four million to 24 million."

“But we are also launching into a competitive, relatively mature market. Gaining audiences is going to require determination and focus. We are … going to have a single person accountable for the service, a new controller of BBC Sounds.”

The BBC iPlayer Radio app for iOS (Apple devices) had been downloaded 1.8m times by April 2013. In March 2011 there were 38 million requests for BBC Radio programmes. In September 2018,  according to a blog by Mr Purnell, there were 26.5m downloads of BBC podcasts in the UK; worldwide there were 63m (24.5m of those were for World Service podcasts).
