Another minefield to navigate for the Remuneration Committee at the BBC. Where, in fair pay terms, does Bob Shennan land as the first-ever Group Managing Director, at the beating heart of the Corporate Centre ?
Bob is on £271k as Director of Radio & Music (this may be a saving in the year to come for the overall budget of Radio & Education; prop James Purnell). One of his new direct reports is Commercial Director Bal Samra (a buddy of Bob's since the launch of 5Live), who is on £323,800. Mr Purnell was not a contender for the title Group Managing Director, which suggests he saw it as either a) not playing to his current skill set, say, on diversity and talent management or b) not a route to the top. Mr Purnell is on £315k.
If Bob leapfrogs Bal, then he lands on a salary more appropriate to the full Board. Tricky stuff, as my old HR chums say.
