The World At One decided to have a pop at BBC Sounds yesterday. Dan 'So....' Taylor-Watt revealed that the BBC will be 'cutting over' from the iPlayer Radio later this year. This is management-speak for letting iPlayer Radio perish.
He claimed BBC Sounds has 1.3m users a week, listening for three hours - a month ago, James Purnell claimed 1.36m, listening for 2 hours 40 mins. (The relentless tv ads don't seeming to be driving the blessed thing foward exponentially..). Both these figures are apparently better than the iPlayer Radio, though exact numbers for the older service were not shared.
Mr Taylor Watt said new functions, including 'live rewind', 'autoplay' and 'an improved browser experience' will be added to Sounds before the BBC throws iPlayer Radio overboard.
