Cover to cover

The Times has had half-an-ear on conversations between Radio 4 middle-ranking managers and the network's programme producers.

The managers have apparently suggested there's money to be saved in less research - producers on Loose Ends and Saturday Live might just read blurbs rather than complete books inorder to research questions for guests with new publications to plug. Presenters of established shows should be ask to do more/some of their own work on scripts and interview preparation. "Simpler programmes" is the message, and no shame in picking low-hanging fruit for Desert Island Discs guests - celebrities on film/play/book plugging tours will be fine.
