Casuals ?

The Mail claims a number of BBC presenters still paid through their own companies have been told that Auntie intends to move their remuneration to PAYE. The paper says that Chris Evans, Jeremy Vine, Claudia Winkleman, Alan Shearer, Alex Jones, Huw Edwards, Steve Wright, Simon Mayo, Nicky Campbell, Nick Grimshaw, Vanessa Feltz and Stephen Nolan channel their BBC earnings through personal service companies, and HMRC is on the prowl.

In the old days, one way of demonstrating that you were properly "freelance" was to work for other employers as well as the BBC. Chris Evans can point to books, the failed re-start of TFIF, and other odds and ends. Jeremy Vine churns out a book a year, it seems. Huw Edwards is hugely available to host your function. Nicky Campbell is co-host of ITV's Long Lost Families and keeps writing songs. But some of the others may be harder pressed to demonstrate income beyond the BBC.
