Would Russell Crowe have made it better ? The assertion in the popular press is that the hard-boiled New Zealand actor was lined up to guest on the first Nightly Show on ITV, and that soft-boiled Wimbledon-born actor Martin Clunes was a last-minute replacement.
Mercurial Crowe has no new product to promote at the moment, but may have fancied a paid-for trip to Blighty to watch Toronto Wolfpack play their first game in UK rugby league's third level, against the London Skolars at the New River Stadium in Wood Green. He missed out on a 76-0 win for the Canadian raiders.
Meanwhile the Nightly Show has provided some extra work for other performers. Warm-up specialist Stuart Oldham, whose other clients include Strictly Come Dancing, Children In Need and The Voice, has the gig currently. Who knows - by the end he could have moved permanently behind the big desk...
