One can only admire the silky negotiating skills of Valerie Hughes D'Aeth, the BBC's Director of HR. Last month she announced that employees working "away from base" overnight would no longer be able to claim for lunch (Limit £6 including VAT and service, if charged).
In response to general union outrage, she's offered the £6 back, but reduced the £16 evening meal limit, and set new conditions. Where a person works for more than 11 hours they will be allowed to claim a second meal at a maximum rate of £6. For staff working on events where they cannot leave the venue (think concerts, Glasto, golf, etc) and choice is limited, then a higher rate may be claimed.
