Don't knock Freedom of Information enquiries; they may drive savings.

A Mr "Ben Brown" asked the BBC how much they'd spent on calls to the speaking clock for each of the past five years. Auntie swerved the big question, saying it would take longer than the rules allow to collate the information. But they did carry out a short three-month survey, and found spending of over £500 - technical staff about to go on air often check local clocks to make sure they're in synch. So now, thanks to the FOI prompt, a free internal number has been set up to provide the check.













NB: There's still something a little odd about the figures above. BT's Speaking Clock advertises its charge at 31p. Who were the BBC calling ?
