Tonight's gonna be....

The last thing most people want from awards ceremonies is that someone makes them longer. Nonetheless, good luck tonight to Radio Academy Chief Executive, DJ Johnnie "Colonel" Myers, who's marking the 30th anniversary of the Sony Awards by adding live performances to the mix. So the Radio 3, Drama, and other more high-minded tables will have to jiggle, Voice-stylee, in their seats as Gary Barlow, Jessie J and Alexandra Burke gyrate for their entertainment.

The ambition is to have the 1300 attendees in their Grosvenor House Hotel seats and attacking starters by 6.30pm, with awards proper starting at 6.50pm. There may be a spread-betting opportunity here...

It could all be very different next year; Sony shares are at a thirty-year-low; Lewis Carnie, stalwart of Radio 2 and a member of the awards committee, is off for a break in telly and yet to be replaced; Tim Davie has posted his form for DG; Soundwomen are on the march.  The next set of RAJARs is out on Thursday.

  • The first Sony-branded Radio Academy Awards ceremony was a lunchtime event with 600 guests at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane in 1983. In those days, there were just 4 BBC national networks and 35 commercial radio stations.
