If the usually-well-informed Dan Sabbagh and Tara Conlan in the Guardian are right about applications for the BBC DG job, there may have to be preliminary interviews to whittle down to a best-practice final three. With headhunters involved, no-one will make a formal application without a guarantee of a hearing - and the Guardian points to Caroline Thomson, Helen Boaden, George Entwistle and Tim Davie as certs to apply, with Jana Bennett at BBC Worldwide considering a punt.
The Guardian says David Abraham, Tony Hall and Peter Salmon won't be candidates when the lists close on May 7th. And adds a reference to a conversation between Dom Loehnis, of Egon Zehnder and Jay Hunt of Channel 4. It makes no mention of Michael Jackson, Ed Richards or Lionel Barber.
Who will conduct the prelims ? And when we get to the final three, will the appointment go to Jeremy Hunt for nod through - or will there be someone else answering the phone in Cockspur Street ?
