Mind your language

We're just moments away from the attempt by Welsh recording artists to stop Radio Cymru from playing their records, and there's still plenty of confusion about rates. The performers say new calculations by the Performing Rights Society mean they now get around £5 in royalties for each play of their platters - whereas the rate for Radio Wales generates £150.  The gap has been increasing since 2007.

If the calculation was made by audience figures alone, the ratio ought to be around 1:3, Radio Cymru to Radio Wales. Unfortunately the PRS machine adds in payments for those who re-broadcast radio in hairdressers, supermarkets,etc - and the Welsh language service isn't bringing home that additional bacon.   Thus a two-day protest, with the BBC caught in the middle.

The Welsh for minute is munud, or, occasionally, funud.
