It looks like the short life of Ambridge Extra, the Radio 4Xtra spin-off following the back-stories of The (mainly younger and unheard) Archers on Radio 4, may be drawing to a close.
Various writers on Twitter are alerting AMEX fans to the fact that they're writing their last episodes. The last in this, second series, is scheduled for October 27th. 4Xtra is facing a 17% cut in its programme budget under DQF proposals, and only has a tiny budget for commissioning new programmes. Perhaps unsurprisingly, after R4 Controller Gwyneth Williams got savaged by short story fans for cutting back that genre, 4Xtra is investing more of what little it has in that direction.
The back story idea doesn't seem to have engaged radio critics and listeners in the way that the younger strategists at Broadcasting House hoped. Best leave this sort of thing to tv...
