The BBC staff newspaper, Ariel, which is to end its life as hard copy in December, started in 1936; it was produced quarterly under editor Gordon Stowell. And from the start, the role of uncomfortable cheerleader was clear in some of the headlines.
Take this, from 1938: "It is our pleasant duty in this number of Ariel to introduce the new Director-General [Mr. Frederick Wolff Ogilvie] to our readers, his staff". Or from 1939 "Goodbye Mr. Norman ! Welcome Sir Allan !" (Roland Norman handing over the Chairmanship to Sir Allan Powell)
My favourite is from December 1937: "The DG says don't worry". I can't track down the supporting copy, but it's a much nicer way of managing things than Mark Thompson's current FIFO-style.
