Gwyneth Williams has lasted just over ten months at the helm of BBC Radio 4 before her first major stand-off. Today, the Society of Authors and National Short Story Week will present her with a 5,000 signature petition asking her to re-think her planned reduction in the number of short stories commissioned and broadcast on the network from three down to one a week. And the formidable Stephen Fry has signed the petition, thus "Please reconsider. I know budgets are tight, but there are few, very few things the BBC does better." The Writers' Guild has also piled in, with General Secretary Bernie Corbett describing the move as "pointless cultural vandalism".
Among other signatories of the petition; Sarah Dunant, Stella Duffy, Simon McBurney, Katie Fforde, Isla Blair and Sue Limb.
Gwyneth's PR on the issue so far has been defensive; has she got any room or appetite for manoeuvre ?
