The Sunday Telegraph has a bizarre double-headed interview with Huw Edwards and Mark Byford, ahead of the Royal Wedding. The departing DDG (now apparently leaving paid employment with the BBC 'in early summer', although he handed over the 'candle of journalism' at the end of the financial year) is prodded gently on the cost of coverage.
Has Mr Byford been given a blank cheque to mount the exercise ? “You’d be amazed if I said yes to that – of course not; it’s public money and we’re rooted in getting effective value...We certainly have an idea of how much it’s costing. But that’s not to divulge with you.”.
Mark, that's simply not the spirit. You need more than an idea - you need a plan. Remember transparency ? Remember Sir Michael Lyons ? Remember FoI ?
