Liam Keelan, who decides what we watch on BBC1 and BBC2 in daytime, has flown a kite for Alexander Armstrong's gameshow Pointless to fill the gap that will eventually be left by Anne Robinson and The Weakest Link.
The Weakest Link was developed in-house by BBC Entertainment in London over a decade ago, but moved to Pacific Quay in Glasgow last year, with new staff hired, and recording done in the BBC studios there. Anne records 50-odd episodes over a five week period, sometimes staying in 5-star hotels like the Blythswood Square (though probably not in a room called The Wee Classic, at £120 a night), but travelling back home for the weekends. The move, announced by Jana Bennett in 2008, boosts "out-of-London" production, and increased utilisation of office space and studios in the PQ behemoth.
Pointless, which first aired in 2009, is made by Brighter Pictures, part of Endemol. Alexander Armstrong is alleged to have been warned off a move to Countdown on C4 while the BBC assembled a package of work for him - and this was part of it. Funnily enough, it was created by Alex's pal, and Pointless co-host, Richard Osman. The show is recorded at Television Centre in London.
Will Alex and Richard be commuting to Glasgow from 2012 ? Will Liam still have a budget big enough to pay for it ? Who will be the weakest link ?
