Monstering the Royal Wedding

Only 14 days to go to the Royal Wedding, and I'm afraid that it's now official: quantity, not quality is driving the BBC's coverage, under close-to-the exit Deputy DG Mark Byford.   Never one to fear going over the top with an idea when surer of his career development, he's now cajoling stories on to tv, radio and web that are not worth much more than "News In Brief" items in a national newspaper.

Today, the normally-measured Torin Douglas brings us the shock news that Hello! plans to publish a bumper Royal Wedding edition. Also, in an entirely scientific exercise, we are told that the Met Office has analysed the weather on all previous 29th April dates, and says "history hints at sunshine". Yesterday we learned that a Staffordshire artist has used thousands of postage stamps to create a picture of Prince William and Kate Middleton.  On Wednesday came the startling news that Prince William's waxwork at Madame Tussaud's has been given "a royal makeover".

On the same day, Will Gompertz, struggling to build a reputation as either an arts editor or accomplished broadcaster, pulled together a run round the houses that says Kate will become "an international clothes-horse".  A charmless version appeared on the 6pm bulletin.  Off-cuts can be seen here.

  • International broadcasters: it's still not too late to "get involved". Why not re-broadcast the World Service, home of the Royal Wedding - and we'll give you free artwork for your ads !
