What sort of switch ?

So far, the only information we have on last night's failure of the BBC's Online and iPlayer service is that it involved "a faulty switch".  Most computer experts will presume this refers to some sort of network or hub switch, failing to re-routing oodles of data.

Anyone who's visited the upper floors of the Broadcast Centre might also think it could mean a switch on a 13-amp power socket.  Far too many twinkling boxes have been bodged into conference rooms, bearing labels "Do NOT Switch off".   But in personnel terms, the BBC operation is 24 hours in a very minimal way, and sometimes subject to cleaners looking for sockets for vacuum cleaners....

  • Belated 1700 update, with thanks to the excellent @nevali: networking switch, in a datacentre in docklands. not a power socket
