Nothing's for ever

You know you're getting old when new buildings that got you interested in modern design are listed for demolition.   The early stages of Broadgate were big influences on the BBC when looking at first plans for the White City site, in terms of both design and construction techniques (how did we get it so wrong with White City 1 ?  Another, much longer story).

Building Design reports that Peter Foggo's first two buildings for Arup near Liverpool Street are to come down, to be replaced by a behemoth from Make, creating four dealing room floors each capable of holding 750 staff. City planner Peter Rees is a tough cookie: "There's only so much heritage an economy can stand. I'm not wanting to pull down all of the City's old buildings, but you've got to change and modernise. UBS wouldn't want to move into an old building".  If only the BBC could interest a nice big bank in White City....
