First singles are not always your best calls. My first-hand-over-your-own money was purchased from Rothery Radio in Prescot, Lancashire - 6 shillings and 3 pence in December 1962. I was split three ways - Kenny Lynch, with "Up On The Roof" (who knew then it was a cover of The Drifters ?); Jet Harris and Tony Meehan, with a bigger sound than The Shadows had managed up to then, with "Scarlett O'Hara" - a follow-up to "Diamonds"; and Rothery's single of the week, sellotaped to the glass in the front door, "Love Me Do" by The Beatles, which was clearly a spelling mistake.
Jet won. The B-Side was called "Doing The Hully Gully", which Jet and Tony wrote, later featured in the woeful film "Just for Fun" with an extraordinary cast including The Crickets, Bobby Vee, Dusty Springfield, Sylvie Vartan, David Jacobs and Freddy Cannon.
Give it a listen at least till Tony's drum break.
