"Spending £100,000 on covering the Chile mine rescue was well worth it for the BBC. They can always make savings elsewhere ..... Maybe a few of those endless round-Britain numbers shivering over the possible effects of the unannounced cuts"
The wise words of Peter Preston in today's Observer. World News Editor Jon Williams has perhaps already had words with his Home News counterpart, Gary Rogers. The investment in graphics, outside broadcasts, the website, and, frankly, the wasted words of spending review thumb-suckers has been extraordinary. However, it will have been at the behest of Mark "Make It Clear" Byford. Some preview journalism is a necessary activity, providing context for viewers and listeners on what's to come. This bloated leviathan, built on Birtist grids, has carried things too far - and should be the last such exercise.
