Nelson's column

Simon Nelson is leaving the BBC after 14 years.  His current role is Controller, Multiplatform Commissioning (and the Guardian misses this bit out) for Vision.   And there's the problem.  The current structure of "new media" at the BBC - part in the Future Media and Technology Division, part in traditional output directorates like Vision, Audio & Music and Journalism - has never worked satisfactorily. So, as Erik Huggers seeks 25% cuts in online output, those caught in the middle are likely to be culled.

Mind you, it's hard to see how Simon cannot be replaced, especially if you read his job description
  • Simon is responsible for developing and delivering the digital media strategy for Vision, including oversight of the Learning and Children's multiplatform activities.
  • He and his team work with other Controllers to commission websites, mobile and red button services which support and enhance the BBC's drama, entertainment, comedy and knowledge programmes.
  • Simon also oversees the team which schedules the BBC's television programmes.
  • Simon is a member of the Vision Board, the Future Media & Technology Board and the BBC Online Board.

Jana Bennett, boss of Vision says ""Simon has decided that it's time for a fresh challenge and will be stepping down from his role at the end of the year to make a move back to the commercial sector."   That's a commercial sector he inhabited for one year three months, according to his published cv, looking at Brand Development for The Independent.
