Digital journalism guru Jay Rosen and the New York Times have collaborated to launch a "hyper local, interactive news site" for the city's East Village, largely run by students from New York University. The tweak is that the "newsgathering" process is open. You can see story pitches, and diaries of events that are being covered - and contribute ideas.
But the "hyper" bit is definitely referring to detail, rather than frenetic excitement. The look and feel is cool to cold. The current diary items to be covered are the Community Board Meeting No 2, Community Board Meeting No 3, and the Police Community Meeting. And, peering harder, these events happened in January.
