Available for conversion

We can manage with fewer courts, says the coalition (probably picking up a long-standing piece of work in the Ministry of Justice under Jack Straw). 157 fewer, precisely, unless there are reversals in Kenneth Clarke's consultation period. So there'll be fewer court officials, magistrates etc - and police, defendants, witnesses, and barristers will generally have much further to travel. Local solicitors can expect to suffer, as can local coffee bars and pubs which offer comfort to those waiting their turn for a ride on the wheels of justice.

Among towns losing both county court and magistrates' court simultaneously are Southport, Whitehaven, Salford, Northwich, Skipton, Pontefract, Dewsbury, Chepstow, Llangefni, Rugby, Newark, Melton Mowbray. Full list at Public Property.
