The BBC Trust has made some minor changes to its "service licences" - 28 documents which seek to specify the commitments and objectives of the various outputs of the BBC. In amongst them is this - a renewed service licence for 6Music - with tweaks, and caveats at the end.
Section 1
The service licence should be amended to better articulate the station’s brand identity.
Section 5.1
Emphasise the importance of minimising song overlap between Radio 2 and 6 Music and between these stations, Radio 1 and commercial radio.
Section 5.1 conditions
The existing condition that half of the station’s music should be more than four years old establishes an arbitrary cut off date and should be replaced with one that establishes a 30% ceiling on ‘new music’1. The service licence condition for 6 Music live music should be raised from 275 to 300 sessions to better reflect and to safeguard existing levels.
The Trust goes on to say that since publishing the report on Radio 2 and 6Music that drove these changes, the executive has suggested closing 6Music in review proposals to the Trust. "At present, these changes are at the proposal stage, and are subject to consultation and further review. As such, we feel it is appropriate to action the existing recommendations now."
