From this day forth, the BBC's King of the North, Peter Salmon, formally exercises control over his fiefdom. But how much control ? He asserts that North is now a BBC division, to rank alongside Journalism and Audio & Music, and as leader, he holds sway over the lives of all BBC employees who will be moving to Media City next year.
But it's going to take a while for the villeins to get used to it. For example, if you work for BBC 5Live in News, you are employed by Journalism, and they will set your salary - as they will for staff at Look North and Radio Manchester. Late afternoon flat whites with Pete might win smiles, but no bonuses. You'd be as well to keep in with Helen Boaden and Mark Byford if you want to develop your career up the news ladder.
If, however, you happen to be Controller of 5Live, you are now on Pete's payroll - but you'd also do well to keep in with Tim Davie, who, as Controller of Audio & Music, will determine your annual budget. And you want to keep in with Mark Byford, because he still regards the news channel as a "News" creation. I'm looking forward to a new, clear, organogram - as I'm sure are all my readers.
