Media Life Magazine has a piece on how US terrestrial radio has lost most of its potty-mouths. "Indecency" complaints against shock jocks were running at 25,000 a quarter at their height in 2008; in the latest quarter, they're down to a mere 1,800.
The size of potential fines has been increased 20-fold from the 2005 level; some of the key "offenders" like Howard Stern, Bubba The Love Sponge and Opie & Antony, have moved to satellite radio, where anything goes; and, after Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl, conservative pressure groups stirred up Washington about all sorts of rudeness.
Still, a mere 1,800 complaints puts Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross into perspective...
