Lead singer and guitarist Alex Chilton was just 16 when "The Letter" became a worldwide No 1 in 1967 for The Box Tops. Probably the greatest deliverers of "blue-eyed soul", the group had fine writers - Wayne Thompson penned "Soul Deep" as well as "The Letter"; Dan Penn, their producer, and Spooner Oldham wrote "Cry Like a Baby".
Born in Memphis, Alex has died in New Orleans after an apparent heart attack. He'd been due to to perform with Big Star on Saturday, closing the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.
