Slicer

My old mate Tim Luckhurst, now an eminent Professor of Journalism at Kent, has turned against his former employer. Normally relied upon to defend the BBC, in today's Independent, he argues for top-slicing of the licence fee to provide plurality of local/regional news. His case is that the offer to share content with all comers could only be accepted by wrong-headed politicians. "Only totalitarian states prefer a single source: 'One people, One State, One News Agency.'"

But it's ok if the licence payer (compelled by the Government) funds two sorts of news service ?
