Today's Scotsman has a good read on their work trying to get comments from any of the nine non-executive directors of the Royal Bank of Scotland - at least three of whom apparently think they're worth re-appointment this year !
They get paid £72,500 a year for a commitment of about two days a month. Their role is to " challenge and help to develop proposals on strategy by bringing a different perspective", "scrutinise the performance of management" and satisfy themselves "that financial controls and systems of risk management are robust and defensible".
The headline ? "The silent nine".
