Jobs and news
It's approaching the end of a week of "record" UK unemployment figures - with the short hand "slump" replacing "recession"in the papers. I've tried but failed to find two images from 1982 - the banner displaying the jobless total across the top of Country Hall in London, put there by GLC leader Ken Livingstone, as a reminder to MPs across the river in the Commons; and the unemployment ticker that ITN ran in the bottom corner of News at Ten. Three million unemployed, which was beginning to look very bad for Mrs Thatcher - then the Falkands War provided a serious distraction...and filled the 1982 archives.
