The International Broadcasting Trust has been monitoring key output from UK news broadcasters across January and February 2026, and whilst counting exercises don't ever tell you the full story, I thought I'd share these paragraphs from their executive summary...
"Comparing the results to our study in 2016, the proportion of foreign news stories on BBC News at Ten has declined from 50% to 38%, hilst ITV News at Ten has fallen from 47% to 38%. This is a significant decline given the extraordinary geopolitical upheaval taking place within the sample period. In contrast, Channel 4 News has increased its coverage, rising from 38% to 54% - the highest level ever recorded by these studies - whilst Sky News has maintained roughly the same level of coverage (49% compared with 48%).
"Is the BBC distinctive? The BBC, funded by the licence fee, is required to be distinctive. However, this study did not identify many distinctive elements in the international coverage of its flagship programme BBC News at Ten, which reported on just three countries not covered by its competitors and had an overall news agenda that was very similar to ITV News and others."
