Rhodri through the middle ?

Four weeks on, a sign of some semi-official pitch rolling for Rhodri Talfan Davies emerging as an interim Director General of the BBC, and the best internal candidate. He's mentioned in dispatches from the well-connected Alex Farber in The Times:

The process to replace Davie, who has agreed to remain in post to ensure a smooth transition, is expected to be settled by March. Plans are being drawn up to appoint an interim director-general.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, the BBC’s director of nations, is considered to be a leading candidate. The 54-year-old has been described as “calm and experienced” by one executive. “There aren’t many credible options,” they admitted.

The interim role would put Talfan Davies, who is responsible for ensuring the BBC is investing in programming and journalism outside of London, in pole position to take the permanent job if an external candidate is not found.
