David and Robbie

Let's take a run round the career of David Grossman, Senior Editorial Adviser to the BBC Board's Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee, whose work provides the spine of the Prescott dossier.   He was said to be the first on the Committee to raise the questions of the problematic, now 'wrong', Trump edit.

He went to fee-paying St Alban's School, then the University of East Anglia, graduating in 1987 with a degree in politics.

He moved through reporting and presenting on Radio Solent to covering politics for BBC North West, he recalls "being hauled off by Special Branch in Southampton during the 1992 General Election campaign for throwing an egg at the then Prime Minister, John Major. Was let go after they got the real culprit."

In 1993, he joined the John Humphry's relaunched On The Record, where toiled one David Jordan, the current Director, Editorial Policy and Standards, who is believed to have taken Grossman's side in Board discussions about the edit. Also in his first journalism job with On The Record was one Robbie Gibb, hired as a political researcher, leaving in 1997 to work for Francis Maude.

Grossman first worked for Newsnight in 2002, under editor George Entwistle, and was billed as Political Correspondent. Robbie Gibb arrived as Newsnight's Deputy Political Editor ths same year, leaving for greater things in 2008.

In 2014 Ian Katz appointed him Technology Correspondent and he set up a Twitter account for the Newsnight Presenter's Chair. In 2019, under Esme Wren, he was made US Correspondent in Washington.

David's had his own brushes with Editorial Standards; in February 2011, a viewer emailed the BBC to complain that David had been wearing a jacket branded front and back with the “North Face” label, and asked if this was sanctioned product placement. It took til September 2011 to clear David.

David is the father of three boys, and one of his last long think pieces was for R4 Analysis in 2019, trying to work out how they've got so far behind girls in exams.

He was in Washington for the Proud Boys' move on the Capitol on January 6th 2021, and went back in 2023 for a special report for Newsnight. It's therefore not surprising he kept an eye on the Panorama doco.

At one stage, he had a sense of humour; cf this homage to The Day Today
