If the BBC follows its current governance rules, the next DG will be sought, interviewed and appointed by the Board's Nominations and Governance Committee. It is lead by the BBC Chairman, Samir Shah, who should be joined by four non-executive members, and the Director General.
The lead non-exec ("Senior Independent Director") Caroline Thomson is a key player; ironically, she left the BBC after being beaten to the DG job by George Entwistle. The committee, for its last three meetings, has been working on succession planning, with reports from Chief People Officer Uzair Qadeer and consultant Grant Duncan from headhunters Korn Ferry.
Sadly, there are no obvious internal candidates for DG or Director of News. Director of Content Charlotte Moore, who was shortlisted for DG after the departure of Lord Hall, decided to pursue commercial programme making in February this year. In News, Deborah Turness and Jonathan Munro kept adding to their own roles; their triumvirate is completed by John McAndrew, who has GB News in his CV. Even constructing an interim position will be tricky for Shah and Thomson.
